On one of the islands in the center of Copenhagen there is the National Opera House, which is a structural unit of the Royal Danish Theater. After lengthy disputes, the Danish parliament approved the project for the construction of the opera house, and in June 2001, the laying of the foundation began, in October 2004 the construction was completed. This is one of the most expensive buildings in the world; the construction of the theater cost the state of Denmark more than $ 500 million. The official opening of the Opera House took place on January 15, 2005. The premiere of Wagner's opera Valkyrie was attended by Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen and Queen Margrethe II.

The building was designed by renowned Danish architect Henning Larsen. It is a 14-storey building, with 5 floors below ground level. The total area of the building is 41 thousand square meters, the area of underground floors is 12 thousand square meters. The interior decoration works of the theater are made of expensive materials: Sicilian marble, 24-carat gold leaf, white maple, an oak floor is laid in the large auditorium. Of particular interest are the magnificent chandeliers. This is a real work of art, created by the famous Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson.

In the large hall of the theater, the main stage is made in black and orange tones, the auditorium can accommodate about 1,700 spectators, the orchestra pit is designed for 110 musicians. The Small Auditorium, also called Takkelloftet, has a capacity of about 180 spectators.

You can also get to the National Opera House by water. There is an elegant pier near the theater, where water buses dock. Not far from the opera house are the city's attractions such as the Royal Palace of Amalienborg and the Marble Church.
