Photo and description

The Spaniards, firmly established in the New World, very zealously guarded their new possessions. For this, fortresses were built, behind the walls of which it was possible to hide during an attack by the French or British. The Ozama fortress appeared in the 15th century in a strategic place - in the port, on the banks of the river of the same name. Now, looking at the fortress, surrounded by a strip of land, it is difficult to believe that several centuries ago the river's waters splashed right next to its walls.

The Ozama Fortress is a whole complex of buildings for various purposes, which is surrounded by a high battlement wall. The most significant object on its territory is the Torre del Omenaje tower. There is an observation deck on its roof, which every self-respecting tourist should visit. From there, an amazing view opens up to the Santo Domingo below. The tower with two-meter walls was once a dungeon where the captives of the Indians were kept, and then those inhabitants of the country who tried to start a revolution. In 1844, the Torre del Omenaje was at the center of an uprising that led to the secession of the Dominican Republic from Haiti. It was above this tower that the national flag was raised.

To the south of the tower is a one-story building, erected in the 18th century. Its three-meter walls reliably protected the armory. Near the arsenal from the river you can see the remains of fortifications.

On the territory of the Ozama fortress there is a bronze monument depicting Commander de Oviedo, who, in addition to military affairs, was also fond of history and created the world's first work dedicated to the past of the New Sveta.
