Photo and description

The Museum of Decorative Arts is one of the most interesting sights of the Greek island of Rhodes. It is located in the historical part of the island's capital in Argirokastro Square next to the Rhodes Art Gallery (Municipal Art Gallery).

The Museum of Decorative Arts was opened to the public in 1966. The room in which the exposition of the museum is located is a three-nave vaulted hall. During the reign of the Knights Hospitallers on Rhodes, the Arsenal was located here.

The exhibits presented in the museum were mainly collected by Italians during their reign in Rhodes (1912-1945) and perfectly illustrate the culture and life of the inhabitants of the islands of the archipelago Dodecanese during Ottoman rule. Most of the museum collection dates back to the 17th - early 20th century.

In the exposition of the museum you can see antique furniture and household utensils, various objects made of ceramics and metal, woodcuts, several musical instruments, jewelry and much more. The museum is especially proud of the magnificent collection of traditional men's and women's clothing, which was collected from all the islands of the Dodecanese. Also of great interest are the painted wall plates from Lindos.

The small but very interesting Museum of Decorative Arts is an ideal place to get acquainted with the culture and traditions of Rhodes. The exhibits presented here are of high artistic and historical value. The museum is very popular and every year it is visited by a huge number of tourists from all over the world.
