Annunciation Monastery description and photos - Russia - Volga region: Nizhny Novgorod. Detailed information about the attraction. Description, photos and a map showing the nearest significant objects. Photo and descriptionThe Annunciation Monastery is located on the bank of the river. It was founded in the XIII century. The five-domed Cathedral of the Annunciation (1649) has survived, to which at the turn of the 17th-18th centuries the one-domed Sergius Church, a refectory with a two-tent Assumption Church (1678), a bell tower and cells (17th century) were added. The Annunciation Cathedral is built like large six-pillar temples, but without the two western pillars. Moreover, all four snare drums, crowned with helmet-shaped domes, are noticeably inclined towards the central one, with a bulbous end. After numerous fires, the cathedral was repaired several times, which distorted its architecture. In 1870-1872, during the restoration work, L. Dahl returned the building to its original forms - this was the first scientific restoration in Russia. Next to the cathedral is the Assumption Church, decorated with two slender decorative tents. Crypts for the burial of monks were built between the Assumption and Sergievskaya churches in the mountain - caves lined with stone. In the 50s of the XX century, it was decided to place the Planetarium in the Church of St. Sergius. At the same time, small chapters were demolished, the central light drum was lowered and the eastern part of the wall with towers and entrance gates was destroyed. Currently, the monastery is undergoing restoration work to restore the original architectural appearance.
