Photo and description

The first mention of the Church of San Frediano dates back to 1061. It was founded by the Buzzaccherini-Sismondi family and was originally dedicated to Saint Martin. Once there was a hospital next to the church.

The Romanesque facade of San Frediano is typical of Pisa's medieval architecture. It is decorated with blind arches, diamond-shaped figures and two-color stones, which were also used in the construction of the city's Cathedral. A huge vaulted window is visible at the top of the facade. The interior decoration, despite the terrible fire of 1675, was well preserved. The church has a typical basilica plan - a central nave and two side chapels. The marble columns are decorated with capitals with stucco figures in the Romanesque style. The works of art stored here include a rare large 12th century cross painted on a gilded panel, several Baroque altars restored in the 16th and 17th centuries, and 17th century paintings by Ventura Salimbeni depicting "Annunciation" and "Nativity of Christ" ... Aurelio Lomi owns the painting The Adoration of the Magi. And the numerous frescoes are the work of Domenico Passignano. The dome is painted by artist Rutilio Manetti. There is a window above the apse, in the center of which you can see the coat of arms of the Agostini family, patrons of the church.

A strong brick bell tower rises next to the Church of San Frediano. Interestingly, a number of offices of various social movements and associations are located here, for example, the Pisa branch of the Italian Catholic Students' Federation, the Association of Catholic Students, the Santa Malatesta Association, which assists international students who come to Pisa from countries at war or from countries with high levels of poverty.
