Shishmanov monastery description and photos - Bulgaria: Samokov. Detailed information about the attraction. Description, photos and a map showing the nearest significant objects. Photo and descriptionThe Shishmanov Monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin, also known as the Chamurili or Samokov Monastery, is located in the Ihtimanska Sredna Gora area, 13 kilometers from the town of Samokov, near the Iskar River. The monastery got its name thanks to the nearby village of Shishmanovo (until 1934 - the village of Chamurliya), whose inhabitants, by order of the authorities in 1954, were resettled to another region. The current monastery was built in 1927 by local residents. It was founded much earlier, during the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. However, all the monastery buildings that stood here were burned by the Turks who invaded the Bulgarian lands. In the XX century, the monastery was restored, but in size it is significantly inferior to the former monastery. On the territory of the monastery there is an Orthodox church, which is a one-nave, domeless basilica with a semi-cylindrical apse and a bell tower. Near the entrance to the church, there is a monument in honor of the Russian captain of the 123rd regiment, as well as Russian and Bulgarian soldiers who died during the battle that took place near the monastery in 1877 during the Russian-Turkish war. Not far from the temple is a small building built over a sacred spring. According to legend, if you light a candle in the temple before dawn and pray for the fulfillment of your desire, and then drink water from the spring, it will certainly come true. On the well-groomed territory of the monastery there are tables and benches - guests of the monastery can relax here after a walk or have a small picnic.
