The theater was founded by V.A. Podobedov and a group of creative youth in August 1933. A theater appeared in the city of Khibinogorsk (now Kirovsk). At that time it was called TEMZ (theater for young spectators). The debut of the theater took place with the fabulous performance "Ivashka Batrachonok". In 1938, the theater acquired the status of a regional theater, and in 1949 it moved to Murmansk. In 1972 the theater was housed in a new building located on Sofia Perovskaya Street.

This theater is the oldest puppet theater in Murmansk. Not so long ago, namely in 2008, the theater celebrated its 75th anniversary. In a difficult wartime, the theater served for the benefit of the victory over the fascist invaders. During the war years, more than a dozen concert programs were prepared, and there are about 1000 front-line concerts played. For the work done during the war years, the entire theatrical collective was awarded medals "For the Defense of the Soviet Arctic."

From the moment of moving to Murmansk, the theater starts working with children of all age categories. The theater's repertoire includes performances on a screen with small cane puppets, as well as performances with actors playing in a “live plan”. There are new performances with puppets that are taller than a human and performances with fake and glove puppets. At the very beginning of the 1980s, the theater mastered the string puppet.

The theater actively participates in International theater festivals. Over the past eight years, the theater has participated in 17 festivals held outside the Murmansk region. The theater is the owner of numerous diplomas, thanks and certificates of honor, among them - the International Diploma "For the Development of Theater Arts" in 2003, and in 2005 in the nomination "Children's Theater" the Murmansk Theater was awarded the International Diploma "Silver Knight".

From 1998 to the present day, the Murmansk Regional Puppet Theater is headed by Evgeny Vladislavovich Sukhanov. Currently, the theater troupe employs 62 people, including 15 actors. Many of the actors have been working in this theater for over 25 years. They share experience, skill and skill with young actors. Three stage masters have the title of Honored Artist. The play's repertoire includes 49 performances. On the stage of the theater, Russian folk tales, traditions and legends of northern peoples, fairy tales of the peoples of the world are brought to life. Staged performances based on plays by contemporary authors (E. Uspensky, A. Usachev, M. Suponin), works of the world's great storytellers: G. H. Andersen, D. Rodari, V. Hauf and many others. Every year the theater staged 3-4 fresh performances.

The theater tours not only in the region, but also in other regions of the Russian Federation, as well as abroad. For example, in 2003 and 2006, the theater toured Northern Norway. In October 2007 the theater took part in the International Festival of Theaters of the Barents Region, and in November 2007 it presented the play "The Goose" at the Puppet Theater Festival in Sweden.

The theater organizes and conducts festivals, celebrations, theatrical performances and concert programs for all age categories, not only in the Russian Federation, but also abroad. There are mass theater tours. Cultural events are organized in cooperation with other theaters and creative teams.
