Photo and description

The Cathedral of the Nativity of John the Baptist in Yekaterinburg is an Orthodox cathedral located on Repin Street, near the Ivanovsky cemetery.

The temple was founded in September 1846 with funds donated by the Yekaterinburg merchant E.A.Telegin. The consecration of the one-altar church took place in September 1860. The first altar was erected in the name of the Nativity of the prophet John the Baptist. However, some time after the opening, the church could no longer accommodate all the parishioners, therefore in 1886, having received the blessing of the Bishop of Yekaterinburg Nathanael, it was decided to lay two more side-chapels - on the southern and northern sides. In December 1887, the left - Nikolsky side-chapel was consecrated, and in July 1888 - the right one, in honor of the icon of the Mother of God "Satisfy my sorrows".

The Cathedral of the Nativity of John the Baptist is the only church in the city that functioned even during the Soviet years. In 1942, with the restoration of the Sverdlovsk diocese, the John the Baptist Church received the status of a cathedral and since then has been the main temple of the city. Since the 60s. The Kurgan and Chelyabinsk dioceses were headed by the Sverdlovsk bishop, which allowed the temple to occupy the place of the main temple of the Urals for almost a third of a century.

In connection with the restructuring in the country, which began in 1988, bells were heard again in the cathedral. Three years later, a new baptismal building was built here. As for the former premises, the remains of Archbishop Clement of Sverdlovsk were reburied in it in September 1994.

At present, the revered icon of St. John the Baptist is kept in the Yekaterinburg Cathedral of the Nativity of John the Baptist. Nicholas of Mirlikisky, as well as religious icons of St. John of Tobolsk and St. Catherine the Great Martyr.
