Photo and description

Limone sul Garda - the name of this small town, located on the Brescian shores of Lake Garda just 10 km from the resort of Riva del Garda, comes either from the Celtic word "lemon", which means " elm ", or from the Latin" limen "-" border ". It is interesting that once this, in fact, a small fishing village was simply called Commune Piccolo - a small commune. You can get here by the western road of Gardesana. The population of Limone sul Garda is about 1.5 thousand people. The residential area is concentrated around the old parish church, and the Mughera peak rises above the entire city, from which wonderful views of the lake and its surroundings open.

Long ago, Limone was the scene of a fierce battle between the locals and the army of Frederick II Barbarossa, who, despite all the might of his troops, he was completely defeated here. This city was the last on the Brescia side of the lake on the very border between Austria and the Kingdom of Italy. This strategically important geographical position made it the subject of constant strife between Brescia and the Counts of Arco, but in the 15th century Limone came under the control of the powerful Visconti family, and later the Venetian Republic. Until the middle of the 20th century, the city remained practically isolated - access to it was only opened after the construction of the Gardezana highway. Before that, you could only get here by water. The emergence of the highway triggered the rapid development of Limone, and first of all - the tourism industry. Thousands of tourists attracted here, attracted by the relatively untouched ancient monuments and stunningly beautiful nature. The inhabitants of the once fishing village began to turn their homes into hotels and guesthouses, and today it is one of the most popular resorts of Lake Garda.

Limone sul Garda gained worldwide fame in the 1970s, when, as a result of medical research, it was found that the blood of the native inhabitants of the town contains apoprotein - the protein part of complex proteins that protects the body from all types of atherosclerosis and prevents the development of heart attacks.

Today the economy of Limone sul Garda is based on the cultivation of citrus fruits, primarily lemons and citrons, olives from which extra virgin olive oil is made, fishing and, as mentioned above, tourism. This town is a popular weekend getaway - its streets are usually packed with visitors from March to October.

The attention of tourists, of course, is attracted by the numerous greenhouses: the first appeared in the 17th century, but only a hundred years later the most spectacular greenhouses were built, which delighted Goethe himself during his Italian journey at the end of the 18th century. Today these greenhouses can be seen in the towns of Reamol and Garbera.

The old Via Fontane leads to the Church of San Benedetto, rebuilt in 1691. And if you go from there towards the small harbor, literally sandwiched between houses, you can go to the church of San Rocco, erected in the 16th century. In the heart of the city, in Piazza Garibaldi, stand the 17th-century Casa della Finanza with its beautiful dark stone covered balcony and the 18th-century Palazzo Chepardi. Tourists can enjoy a leisurely stroll along the cobbled streets, which are decorated with blooming bougainvillea in the warm season.
