Photo and description

Odigitrievskaya church is one of the temples located on the territory of the Rostov Kremlin. It was built in 1692-1693, a little later than other buildings of the Bishops' court complex, during the reign of Metropolitan Joasaph (successor of Iona Sysoevich). It is an example of architecture made in the Moscow Baroque style. The Hodegetria Church is the last independent construction of the Bishops' Court of the Rostov Kremlin. Cultural heritage of the Russian Federation.

The temple is located in the north-western corner of the Bishops' court, joins the wall surrounding the court. It was being erected at a time when the walls were already built, and the craftsmen had to make special efforts so that the church did not look foreign.

In plan, the church has a rectangular shape, 2-storey, stretched from east to west. Only the top floor was used as a church. An open balcony runs along the perimeter of the second floor, which is the hallmark of the Church of Hodegetria. He distinguishes it among other Rostov churches, which are equipped with galleries. The outer walls are decorated with a triangular pattern that creates a sense of relief from a distance. It is noteworthy that the painting was done much later than the construction of the church.

The interior decoration of the Odigitrievskaya church is also significantly different from other buildings of Rostov the Great. On the walls and vaults of the temple, in total, there are two dozen stucco cartouches of a peculiar shape. Immediately after the construction, the cartouches were painted. By the second half of the 19th century, when the Bishops' Court of the Rostov Kremlin was in decline, the state of the paintings worsened. and in 1912, for the arrival of Emperor Nicholas II in the city, they were renovated. Then, in the period from the 1920s to the 1950s, the walls of the temple, along with the cartouches, were whitewashed, and the paintings, in turn, were badly damaged. In 2001-2003, they were opened, restoration work on the paintings was carried out.

Today, the Hodegetria Church houses a museum exposition.
