Photo and description

The picturesque ruins of Laudegg Castle are located at the foot of the Samnaun mountain range near the village of Ladis, included in the Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis resort. The castle is located on a rocky hill opposite a mountain with another fortress called Berneck. Berneck Castle is clearly visible from the foot of the ruins of the Laudegg fortress.

Laudegg Castle was built around a residential tower, which was first mentioned in written sources in 1239. At the beginning of the 15th century, the owners of the castle were involved in a peasant revolt, as a result of which their property was destroyed. The castle was partially restored by order of the ruler Maximilian I, but the repair was superficial. Already in 1551, no one lived in the castle. The manager of the surrounding lands moved to the palace, located in the neighboring village of Ried im Oberinntal, and in the castle of Laudegg they set up a well fortified weapons depot. Subsequently, until the 17th century, it housed the Supreme Court of the Landeck region. However, the judges moved to a more convenient place, and the Laudegg castle was left unattended and began to gradually collapse.

In 1964, the unhurried restoration of the fortress began, which continues to this day. It is not the state who invests in this old building, but the current owner of the castle. Sometimes, in the summer months, he lets tourists into the territory of the Laudegg fortress. The castle is open one day a week in July and August. The exact schedule should be found on the website of the village of Ladis. But, even if you fail to visit the territory of the fortress, the ascent to the foot of the castle and the panoramic view from above will leave an unforgettable experience.
