The University of Coimbra was founded in 1290 and is considered one of the oldest universities in the world, in which the educational process has never stopped, since the very first day of its foundation. The university is also considered the oldest university in Portugal, one of the largest higher education institutions and major research institutions in the country. The university has eight departments that graduate bachelors and masters in arts, humanities, social and natural sciences, mathematics, sports and technical sciences. The university also has doctoral studies. The university has approximately 20,000 students from all over the world.

The university was founded by King Dinis of Portugal. Initially, the educational institution was located in Lisbon, the Faculty of Humanities, the Faculty of Medicine, Law and Church Law were created.
