Photo and description

The Chapel of St. Andrew the First-Called is one of those places of worship in Kiev, which are dedicated to saints whose activities are directly related to the city. It was here, according to legend, that the holy Apostle Andrew the First-Called, who prophesied the construction of Kiev on the Dnieper hills, preached. The construction of the chapel was carried out thanks to the Public Fund of St. Andrew the First-Called, which allocated the necessary funds for this. N. Zharikov became the chief architect of the project.

Since the chapel is located not far from the Kiev Lavra, its creators tried to do everything to ensure that it harmoniously blends into the surrounding landscape. For this purpose, it was decided to use traditional architectural forms that are typical for Kiev. In particular, the author of the project skillfully applied the main ideas of the Ukrainian baroque, but at the same time the chapel of St. Andrew the First-Called looks quite modern.

The chapel of St. Andrew the First-Called was implemented taking into account the idea of a vertical dominant: it is rather small at the base (only 6x6 meters), but its height is all 18 meters. In such an original way, it was possible to give a unique flavor not only to the structure itself, but to the entire area on which it is located. To make the external icons of the chapel by L. Meshkova, the technique of ceramic painting was used.

Near the chapel, in honor of the 2000th anniversary of the Nativity of Christ, a memorial sign was erected. The compositional idea of the temple, as it were, is complemented by the monument to St.Andrew the First-Called located across the street from the chapel, by the same N. Zharikov. The monument was made of a solid block of granite, in the upper part of the pedestal is stylized as a cloud, which was made in order to emphasize the holiness of the apostle.
