The construction of the mosque began back in 1879 at support of the colonial government. Opened in 1881 by Baiturrahman Raya was supposed to symbolize the consent and reconciliation of local residents with Dutch, moreover, the erected mosque replaced the old temple, destroyed to the ground during the brutal Aceh war. The Baiturrahman Raya project belonged to an Italian, however the appearance of the mosque combines influences from Mughal, Indian and traditional Indonesian architecture. The mosque belongs to the category of"juma", which means "Friday", here every Friday at noon collective prayers are performed, mandatory for all Muslims. Baiturrahman Raya - the largest temple in the city and can rightfully be considered a cultural and religious symbol of the city. In 2004 year, during the strongest tsunami, the mosque remained safe and sound, although most of Banda Aceh fell into ruins.
