Photo and description

The Campo dei Fiori Regional Natural Park is one of the largest protected natural areas in the province of Varese in the vicinity of Lake Maggiore. In the north and west, the park is bounded by the Val Cuvia valley, in the east by the Val Ganna valley, and in the south it is bordered by the Laveno Mombello - Varese highway.

Campo dei Fiori owes its beauty to the rich variety of plants and animals that inhabit its territory. By the way, the name of the park itself is translated as "Field of flowers". Local forests are represented by beech, chestnut, ash, maple and linden, and the meadows are overgrown with wild orchids and gentian. In the feathered kingdom, birds of prey prevail - kites, wasp-eaters, buzzards, sparrowhawks, peregrine falcons and eagles, and among mammals there are red deer, roe deer and bats.

In addition, on the territory of Campo dei Fiori there are several natural monuments, such as the Fonte del Ceppo mineral spring or the unusual shape of the Marmitte dei Giganti rocks, formed under the influence of the Vellone River. And there are over 130 underground caves here!

Among other interesting places in the park, one can note the Rocca di Orino - a small fortified structure of the 15th century, which was used as a warehouse for storing agricultural products and as a place of shelter for residents of the surrounding villages in case of danger. You can also see the Torre Velate Tower - an ancient defensive building, built in the 11-12th centuries.

Throughout the park there are several hiking trails equipped with information stands that tell about the history and natural features of these places. As part of an excursion group, the park can also be visited by mountain bike. And for lovers of a healthy lifestyle in Campo dei Fiori there is a special area where they can train their agility. Finally, climbing the highest point of the park - Mount Punta Paradiso (1226 meters), you can see the Schiapparelli Observatory and the Subalpine Geophysical Center with a meteorological station and seismological laboratory.
