It was built in 1514 for Talavera Maldonado, knight of the Order of Santiago, professor at the University of Salamanca, member of the Royal Council of Castile. It was he who decorated his mansion with the symbol of the order – numerous valves of scallop shells. More than three hundred shells are staggered. This decor is notable for the fact that depending on the light, the pattern on the shells seems to change. The windows of the mansion are decorated with graceful grilles. It is also worth noting the coffered ceiling, stairs and a two-level courtyard. In the center of the yard there is a well, once provided uninterrupted water supply. The foundation of the house, according to legend, contains an ounce of gold – much more than the signs of that time required for construction. Since 1929, the House with Shells has been a national monument. The state public library is now located here.
