For almost half a century, the city had no fortifications and was an easy target for enemy ships. And so it happened: 40 years after the founding of Havana was captured by the French. The city was burned almost to the ground, all residents and the governor fled to neighboring settlements. After a sad experience, a decree was immediately adopted on the construction of powerful fortifications, which were supposed to provide protection from the maximum possible siege for the duration. This is how several fortresses and castles appeared at once, which later played a major role in the defense of the city. Today Old Havana and its fortifications are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
