Porta Palio is one of the gates of Verona.
The gate was built in 1542-1557 as a defensive fortification of the city. The city lists, which Dante mentioned in one of his works, were chosen as the site for the construction of the gate. The author of the project was the architect Sanmikeli. Initially, the gate was called Porta San Sisto.
Feature of Porta Palio – their unique facade. The facade, facing the road, was created in the classical style, with five openings forming a covered gallery in the thickness of the gate. The facade, facing the city, was clad in rustic, has only one arched opening.
