Photo and description

Lisbon Zoo is one of the oldest zoos in Europe. It was created in 1884 and today has the largest zoological collection: there are more than 2000 animals, reptiles and birds of more than 300 species that live in conditions as close as possible to natural ones. The zoo covers a huge area - about 16 hectares - and was created by the efforts of Dr. Van Der Laan, who was the owner of the largest aviary in Portugal at the time, and with the support of Bento de Sousa, Sauce Martins and Mei Figuere.

Lisbon Zoo is not only a traditional zoo. On the territory of the huge park there are souvenir and toy shops, cafes, there is a family recreation area where you can have a picnic. In 1995, a dolphinarium was opened at the zoo; The dolphin show is very popular with visitors and is considered one of the best dolphin shows in the world. Also worth a visit is the sea lion show, where lions perform breathtaking acrobatic acts, and trainers talk about the habits and natural habitats of these amazing animals. In the Enchanted Forest, you can see free-flying birds, as well as attend a show of parrots performing all kinds of tricks.

The zoo is divided into thematic zones. The terrarium contains many species of turtles, snakes, exotic fish and lizards. In principle, all animals freely walk around the territory, only some species of wild animals are in enclosures.

Animax amusement park has attractions. In 1996, the “Children's Farm” attraction was invented, where children can get acquainted with life on the farm and agriculture. Rainbow Park, which has playgrounds, is only open on weekends and holidays. A cable car runs over the entire zoo, and if someone is afraid of heights, you can ride a small train around the zoo.
