White Horse Temple (Baimasi) in China, Luoyang Resort

This temple is the first Buddhist temple in all of China. It was founded with funds from Emperor Ming Di of the Han Dynasty. Date of its foundation – 68 years old. At that time, Luoyang was the capital of the state.

Legend has it that Emperor Ming Di had a dream. In this dream, a deity flew from the west, emitting an unearthly light. The emperor decided it was the Buddha himself. He equipped an embassy in India, ordering two monks to bring the sacred Buddhist   texts. Monks Return to Luoyang with 42 Chapter Sutra and with a statue of Gautama.

After their return, the Buddhist temple of Baymasa was founded by the order of the emperor. It was named after the white horse that brought Buddhist shrines to China.

The temple was rebuilt several times, now it occupies an area much larger than the original. Its total area is 13 hectares. The temple is located 12 kilometers east of Luoyang.
