The short name of this city is – La Laguna. The city was founded in 1496 by the Spanish conqueror Alonso de Lugo. In 1999, the city was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

About 144 thousand people live in La Laguna. The city is home to the oldest university in the Canary Islands.

The city is divided into two parts: the Lower, built in an organized manner and according to the plan, and the Upper, with a spontaneous layout.

Many city attractions are associated with the founder of the city. The city hall houses the flag under which Alonso de Lugo made his conquests. And in the Cathedral, which stands on the main city street, right behind the altar stands the tombstone of the conquistador.

The city's main Historical Museum is located on Calle San Agustin. It is housed in a house built in 1593 in the Renaissance style.
