In 1999, the city was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. About 144 thousand people live in La Laguna. The city is home to the oldest university in the Canary Islands. The city is divided into two parts: the Lower, built in an organized manner and according to the plan, and the Upper, with a spontaneous layout.
