Photo and description

The covered market of the city of Donetsk is located on Shevchenko street, 6. It has two more names among the people: "Central market" and "Collective farm market". It is called central because it is located in the center of the city, and collective farm - under Soviet rule, it was almost the only place in the center where collective farm vehicles with fruits and vegetables came.

For a long time, from the beginning of its construction, few people knew that the market was largely due to Joseph Stalin. Subsequently, the market bore his name for 37 years. The covered market was completed in 1961.

In the post-war period, there was a need to build a large covered market in Stalino. On May 18, 1949, a meeting of the executive committee took place, with the then assessor Vasily Feropontov, where this issue was considered. A year before, the Academy of Architecture of the Ukrainian SSR had already developed a scientific and technical plan for the construction of covered markets in Stalino and Kiev. But since there were not enough funds for both projects, construction in the capital began in 1949, and the regional center had to wait.

Only in May 1952, a decree of the USSR Council of Ministers was issued, one of the points of which was an order to Stalin the regional executive committee from 1953 to begin construction of the covered market. Funds for the construction were provided from deductions of fees from regional markets to the local budget. Thus, the Stalin's covered market was built at the expense of regional markets.

Today this object is more of an architectural monument. But along with this, it functions as a market, although it is inferior to others, newer and more extensive in size and range of goods. In addition to retail and warehouse space, there is a McDonald's restaurant, and recently a lower covered market opened nearby.
