Photo and description

The Golden Sun House is located on the Market Square. This house turned out as a result of reconstruction and unification of two buildings, dating from the XIII century. On its facade, you can still find Gothic elements that have survived from that time. The mansion was reconstructed and expanded several times until it was changed in baroque form in 1694-1695. Then the Viennese architect I.L. von Hildebrandt was invited for an almost complete reconstruction of the house. Subsequent significant repairs were carried out two more times with a frequency of 20-25 years.

During the Renaissance, the "Golden Sun" mansion was owned by the von Bockwitz family, which welcomed many high-ranking guests. There was a time when in several houses in the Market Square (House of the Golden Sun, House of the Blue Sun and the House of Seven Electors), connected by covered passages, were quartered by the King of Bohemia Vladislav Jagiellonchik, Emperor Rudolf II and Monarch Ferdinand I.

In 1742, the house "Golden Sun" served as a place for peace negotiations between representatives of the Prussian and Austrian troops. From its balcony, the coming truce was solemnly announced.

During the Second World War, the house survived under the bombing. Between 1965 and 2004, it housed the Wroclaw Medal Museum. Then the building was closed for reconstruction and only in 2010 a new exhibition was held in several of its premises. Shown here is the manuscript of the work of Adam Mickiewicz "Pan Tadeusz", transferred from the National Institute. Ossolinsky, and some other rare books. Some premises of the "Golden Sun" house are private offices.
