Photo and descriptionGargano is a historical and geographical region of the Italian region of Apulia, consisting of a vast isolated mountain range of several peaks that form the ridge of the Gargano Peninsula jutting into the Adriatic Sea. This peninsula is often referred to as the "spur of the Italian boot". The highest peak is Monte Calvo - 1065 meters above sea level. Most of the peninsula is about 1200 sq. Km. - is part of the Gargano National Park, founded in 1991 in the province of Foggia. The Gargano Peninsula is partly covered by a forest called the Foresta Umbra, the only surviving places in Europe where you can see the ancient oaks and beeches that were once found almost throughout the continent. The ecosystem of the Apennine deciduous forest is also located here. The coast of Gargano is dotted with beaches. The small towns of Vieste, Peschici and Mattinata are world famous seaside resorts. The two main salt lakes of the peninsula - Lesina and Varano - are located in its northern part. Mount Monte Gargano has long been considered one of the most visited places of pilgrimage - it is home to the oldest sanctuary of the Archangel Michael in Western Europe. Today, tourism is flourishing on the Gargano Peninsula and the corresponding infrastructure with hotels, restaurants and camping is actively developing. Marina di Lesina is especially popular. Gargano's attractions include the Abbey of Santa Maria di Ripalta, the Black Stones volcanic cliffs and the Temple of San Nazario. Various events are held annually in the towns and villages of the peninsula: for example, in May, the San Primiano regatta is held, and in August, San Rocco Day is celebrated.
