Photo and description

As in many cities in Spain, Seville is home to many beautiful old churches. One of these churches is the ancient Catholic Church of San Esteban, which is of both artistic and historical and cultural value. The church was built at the beginning of the 15th century on the ruins of an ancient mosque located here earlier. During the Lisbon earthquake in 1755, the church of San Esteban suffered serious damage, after which it was restored with significant changes. In particular, a tower with a bell tower was added to the church building. The bell tower crowned with a graceful spire gives the whole building a grandeur and adds picturesqueness to the strict facade of the building. Initially, the tower was created under the leadership of Juan Gomez, later it was restored according to the design of Pedro de Silva.

The building of the temple is designed in the Gothic style with elements inherent in the Mudejar style. The facades of the church are decorated with two magnificent lancet portals made of stone. The church has three naves, the central of which is wider and higher than the side ones.

The main altar inside the church was created by the artist Luis de Figueroa in 1629. One of the altar fragments was made of late 14th century Moorish tiles. The altar is adorned with seven magnificent paintings by the brilliant Francisco de Zurbaran, which depict biblical subjects.
