Torre Caligo description and photos - Italy: Lido di Jesolo. Detailed information about the attraction. Description, photographs and a map showing the nearest significant objects. The title in English is Torre Caligo. Photo and descriptionTorre Caligo is one of the attractions of the resort town of Lido di Jesolo, which is an old medieval tower. It was built by the Venetians on the right bank of the Caligo Canal, after which it was named, to observe the place where the canal flows into the Sile-Piave Vecchia River. The fact is that at that time this canal was an important transport artery between the lagoon, Piave and the rivers of the Friulia region. It is believed that Torre Caligo was built on the ruins of an ancient Roman structure, from which only the foundation has survived. Count Filiasi, who wrote an important work on the history of Venice, stated in his manuscripts that the tower was built as early as 930. And on some maps of the 18th century, you can see that initially there were two towers on this place, bearing the same name. The second was on the opposite bank of the Caligo Canal in the town of Lio Maggiore, but not a single stone has come from it to this day. In the 15th century, Torre Caligo was called Turris de Piave, and, according to the discovered historical documents, a number of similar structures were built along the entire Revedoli Canal - Torre da Finet and Torre de Rodevol. The latter were completely destroyed in the 17th century. Today the medieval Torre Caligo can be seen in the western part of the commune of Jesolo.
