Photo and description

The new square, built behind the former embankments, has become the cultural center of Geneva. In the center of the square is the statue of General Henri Dufour, national hero and creator of the first geographical map of Switzerland.

The Rath Museum is housed in an elegant building funded by the Rath sisters. The activities of that museum are aimed at holding exhibitions on two main themes: the art of ancient times and modern art.

The Opera House was restored in 1879 after the famous fire that broke out during the production of Wagner's opera Valkyries. The orchestra was conducted by P.I. Tchaikovsky, S.P. Diaghilev organized a music and dance festival.

In the southern part of the square is the building of the Conservatory, built in the middle of the 19th century and later expanded with the addition of side wings. In 1906, A. N. Skryabin gave recitals here.

The high gates lead to the Bastion Park. This is the former Botanical Park of Geneva, where about 50 species of trees still grow. In the depths of the park is the Einar Palace, where the University of Geneva is located.
