It was founded in 1957 and was part of the Municipal Library of Piraeus, located in the building of the city theater. In 1985, the City Art Gallery became an independent structural unit. Today the gallery is located in the building at st. Filonos, 29. The exposition of the City Art Gallery is extensive and entertaining. More than 800 works by contemporary Greek artists are presented here, including works by such famous authors as Axelos, Volonakis, Geralis, Dukas, Kokotsis, Maleas, Romanides and many others. A special niche in the gallery is occupied by the works of talented, but already very famous young artists, among which there are a lot of natives of Piraeus. The Municipal Art Gallery of Piraeus also houses an impressive collection of works by the sculpture of Georg Castriotis (1899-1969), donated by the widow of the master to the mayor's office of Piraeus in 1974, and 156 works by the famous Greek artist Lazaros. The personal collection of the popular Greek actor Manos Katrakis deserves special attention - theatrical costumes, props, photographs, personal belongings, etc. The most valuable and interesting exhibits of the gallery are "Sun Baths"; Lutrasa (oil, 69 x 50 cm), “Port of Piraeus” by Axelos (oil, 72 x 132 cm) and “Building under construction” Byzantios (tempera, 53 x 43 cm).
