Photo and description

The Matryoshka Museum is located in the historical center of Moscow, in Leontievsky Lane. The museum is a branch of the Folk Crafts Foundation. It was opened in 2001 in a mansion, where more than a hundred years ago there was a workshop in which the first toy with the name Matryona, or Matryoshka, was made.

In the museum you can learn the history of the appearance of a souvenir that has become popular all over the world ... The first copy of the matryoshka at the end of the 19th century was carved by a master, hereditary turner - Vasily Zvezdochkin. This happened in a workshop at the store "Children's Education", which belonged to the famous patron of arts and crafts A. Mamontov. The toy was painted by the famous artist Sergei Malyutin, a member of the "World of Art" circle. The first matryoshka was a girl in a folk costume, holding a black rooster.

The Russian nesting doll was presented at the World Trade and Industrial Exhibition in Paris in 1900. Matryoshka was awarded a bronze medal for the best embodiment of the idea of family unity and the preservation of family values.

The Moscow Museum contains a variety of exhibits. These are dolls made by masters of folk art crafts. These are also the author's nesting dolls, created by modern experimental authors.

The museum's exposition is located in two halls. In the first hall you can see nesting dolls of a classical form, but painted based on the painting by Kazimir Malevich "Athletes". Matryoshka dolls donated to the museum by Artemy Lebedev's studio are displayed in the same room. Each of the donated dolls illustrates one of the units for measuring the amount of information. From terabyte to bit. The exposition presents "families" of nesting dolls. The largest of them has 50 dolls, and the smallest is only a few millimeters in size.

In the second room, copies of the very first dolls - matryoshkas - are exhibited. The nesting dolls are painted under fairytale characters, represent portraits of members of the royal family and depict famous actresses of the 20th century. Here you can see a Japanese prototype of a Russian souvenir - a symphony orchestra consisting of matryoshka musicians.

Interesting excursions and master classes on painting nesting dolls are held in the museum. There is also a souvenir department where you can buy your favorite samples.
