Photo and description

The National Museum of Contemporary Art "Carlos Merida", located in Guatemala City, was named after the Guatemalan painter and graphic artist Carlos Merida.

The original building of the current museum was built in 1930 as a hall for President General Jorge Ubico. This beautiful and rich building, decorated in a colonial style, became a museum in 1975 and still functions as a gallery of the Ministry of Culture. The history of the National Museum of Modern Art dates back to the first works of Guatemalan creators, whose works were exhibited at the National Museum of History and Fine Arts.

The building itself is a kind of museum exhibit. Numerous arches and columns give it a special flavor. Inside, the interior is made of natural white wood, with massive forged chandeliers hanging from the cassette ceiling of each hall in the center.

The exposition of the museum is a collection of various paintings and sculptures of Central America, covering all periods of modern art - from romanticism to cubism. Temporary exhibitions are also held here. One of the interesting exhibits of the museum is a concrete wall with images of hands and faces. The museum also displays the works of contemporary Guatemalan artists - Carlos Valente and Umberto Garavito.

Museum staff conduct excursions, lectures and consultations for students and tourists.
