The Georgian National Museum in the city of Tbilisi is a whole museum network that unites several of the most famous museums in the country. It is located in the center of the Georgian capital on Rustaveli Avenue.

The founding date of the Georgian National Museum is December 30, 2004. It was then that thirteen museums of the country were united into one department. The museum includes the funds of the Museum of the History of Tbilisi, the Museum of Georgia named after S. Janashia, the Samtskhe-Javakheti Historical Museum named after I. Javakhishvili, the Ethnographic Museum named after G. Chitaia, the State Museum of Art of Georgia, the Museum of Soviet Occupation, the Dmanisi Museum-Reserve of History and Archeology, Archaeological Museum-Reserve in Vani, Svaneti Museum of History and Ethnography, Institute of Paleobiology, Signaghi Museum, The National Picture Gallery of Georgia and the Institute of Archeology.

The founding of the Georgian National Museum was the result of legal, institutional and structural reforms in the country in order to modernize the management of cultural institutions in a single network. Almost from the moment of its foundation, the museum has been under the management of Professor and Corresponding Member of the Georgian Academy of Sciences D. Lordkipanidze.

The austere spacious building of the museum is made in the style of old Georgian architecture. Previously, it housed the Caucasian Museum, which has existed since 1825. The modern Georgian National Museum contains unique items of Caucasian culture.
