Description, photographs and a map showing the nearest significant objects. The title in English is Cappella Espiatoria. Photo and descriptionThe Chapel of Atonement in Monza in the Italian region of Lombardy was built as a memorial monument on the site where the anarchist Gaetano Bresci killed King Umberto I in 1900. The chapel is located near the entrance to the Royal Villa between Via Regina Margherita and Via Matteo da Campione. The son of the murdered king, Vittorio Emmanuele III, entrusted the construction of the chapel to the elderly architect Giuseppe Sacconi, the author of the Roman monument to Vittoriano, but it was completed by her pupil Sacconi, Guido Cirilli. Cirilli slightly modified the original project of Sacconi and completed the work in 1910. The stone Chapel of Atonement, about 35 meters high, is crowned with an obelisk-like cross, on top of which you can see a bronze crown and royal symbols of the Savoy dynasty. And at the entrance there is a sculptural composition "Pieta" by Lodovico Polyaga. The interior of the chapel is decorated with Byzantine-style mosaics and colored marble - here you can see images of angels, saints and members of the royal dynasty of Savoy. Around the chapel, there is a park, surrounded by a wrought iron grill, by Alessandro Mazzucotelli. Every year on July 29, the day of the assassination of Umberto I, a memorial ceremony takes place in the chapel, and at night the chapel itself is illuminated. Interestingly, there is another chapel in the world, built as a sign of atonement for the regicide - the Chapel at the atonement of the execution of King Louis XVI in Paris.
