Photo and description

The Commerce Square is a wide quadrangle surrounded by arcades with a staircase leading down to the river. The square is often called the Palace Square, as the royal palace, built by Manuel I and destroyed by the terrible earthquake of 1755, stood here. On the site of the palace, buildings with graceful arcades were built

In the center of the square, on a high plinth, there is an equestrian statue of the reformer king Jose I, whose minister was the Marquis de Pombal.

On the south side of the square, two square towers. The road leads past them to the Tagus River. Opposite is the majestic Arc de Triomphe.
