Photo and description

The Church of Our Lady of Czestochowa is considered one of the oldest churches in Zielona Gora. Previously it was called the Church of the Garden of Christ and for a long time belonged to Protestants. The foundation stone of this church was laid in September 1745. Funds for the construction of the church were allocated by the city burgomaster VB Kaufmann. Construction continued until the end of 1748.

The half-timbered Church of the Virgin Mary was built following the example of Greek temples and had the shape of a cross. Its facades were decorated in a baroque style. The priests of the new church have introduced a very correct tradition that has existed for several centuries. Until now, before each holy mass, the image of Our Lady of Czestochowa is shown to the faithful, as in the sanctuary on Jasna Gora.

The Church of the Virgin Mary was built without a tower, but it was foreseen in the original draft. What prevented the organizers of the church from erecting a tower next to the church cannot be said now. The brick bell tower was added almost a hundred years later - in 1828. In 1929, the tower was decorated with a clock created in Berlin, which is still in operation.

After the Second World War, the once evangelical church became Catholic, which remains to this day.

In the interior of the church many ancient objects have survived, which are now of historical and artistic interest. Among them are the main altar, made in 1749 in the regency style, a stone font made in 1755 and decorated in the Rococo style, a carved wooden partition between the presbytery and the nave, and an organ of the early 20th century.
