Photo and description

The State Maritime Museum of Madrid is located in the center of the capital, in the building of the General Directorate of the Spanish Navy. The idea of creating a museum dedicated to the maritime history of Spain belongs to Antonio de Valdes y Fernandez Basan, who served as the secretary of naval affairs under King Charles IV. Although the museum was founded in 1792, for various reasons, it did not open until 1843 under Queen Isabella II at the Palace of the Soviets on Madrid's Grand Street.

The main activities of the museum are not only familiarization of visitors with the collections exhibited here, but also the search and preservation of new exhibits on relevant topics. In addition, the museum also fulfills an educational mission - after all, here you can learn a lot of new facts, both about the maritime history of the Spanish state, and about marine science in general.

The museum presents collections of weapons, numismatics, naval uniforms, models of ships, sea regalia. There is a unique old map of the American continent here, which is the oldest map of this continent. It also houses a large collection of art related to the Spanish navy from the 16th century to the present day. All expositions of the museum are arranged in chronological order.

Most of the museum's exhibits were donated to him by the Royal House, the Maritime Chancellery and Maritime Services, the Royal Maritime Observatory of San Fernando, the leadership of the seaports of Cuba and the Philippine Islands, as well as simply people connected in one way or another with maritime affairs.
