Photo and description

On the centenary of the publication of Sigmund Freud's book "The Interpretation of Dreams" in 1999, the most unusual museum of St. Petersburg was opened in the premises of the Eastern European Institute - the Museum of Dreams named after this famous psychoanalyst. It is at least surprising that in the museum of the founder of psychoanalysis there is not a single personal thing of Z. Freud. But thanks to the atmosphere created here, museum visitors have a unique opportunity to realize the nature of their subconscious fears and secret desires. Most of all, this museum will be of interest to lovers of secrets, psychoanalysis and esotericism.

The museum has two halls. In the first hall you can see 12 information showcases that tell about the life of this unusual scientist, his works, theories, catchphrases. The second hall is the room of dreams! A collection of images uncharted abstraction, which were once part of Sigmund Freud's dreams. Here visitors are on their own. Having disconnected from the outside world, completely immersed in the atmosphere of the unreal, one can take an unusual walk through the dreams of Freud, who says that "sleep is not nonsense, but a distorted, disguised realization of repressed desire." With the help of a projector, you can simulate your own dreams, images and dreams on the screen in the center of the hall. There is also an exposition of objects that were somehow mentioned in the book "Interpretation of Dreams": dresses, hats, walking sticks and much more. Here you can see numerous photographs, postcards, figurines, engravings, various antiquities from the places where the scientist once visited. Showcases show photographs of books that Freud read, including illustrations for the Philippson Bible, which he saw in a dream. The famous dream drawings by Pavel Pepperstein separate these two museum halls. And after examining the exposition, the audience will have another surprise: the opportunity to visit a real “deaf” St. Petersburg courtyard-well, passing through the door with the inscription “Exit to reality”.

In addition to guided tours of the exposition, the museum regularly holds exhibitions, lectures, concerts, meetings of discussion clubs.

The St. Petersburg Museum works closely with two Freud museums: Vienna, located in the place where the scientist he worked for many years, and in London, opened in Freud's last apartment, where an extensive collection of antiquities is still kept, in which there are more than three thousand copies, a library and his famous couch.

Freud's Dream Museum in St. Petersburg, in contrast from those European not connected with the place of residence, nor with the material things that once surrounded him. It is dedicated to his ideas and dreams, what is ephemeral, ideal, virtual. The Museum of Dreams of St. Petersburg is a museum of psychological reality created from feelings, fragments, images, dreams, thoughts.
