Photo and description

Mstislavsky District Historical and Architectural Museum was founded in 1988. The collection of museum collections continued until 1995. In May 1995, the grand opening of the museum took place in the building of the former post office - an architectural monument of the 19th century. Now in the three halls of the museum there are more than 12 thousand exhibits.

The first hall demonstrates the collection "Spiritual springs of the Mstislavl land", dedicated to the life and work of the first printer Peter Mstislavets - assistant to the famous first printer Ivan Fedorov. In 1564 in Moscow they published the first printed books Apostle and Chasovnik. In the early 1570s, Peter Mstislavets, who by that time had parted with Ivan Fedorov, founded his own printing house in Vilna with the support of wealthy citizens and Orthodox merchants and published the books The Gospel, Psalter, The watchmaker.

The second hall of the museum "From the history of the Mstislav region: from antiquity to the end of the 18th century" demonstrates archaeological finds discovered during excavations of the Mstislavsky castle. Before us is the true history of a medieval city: customs, culture, and the development of crafts. Here you can see everyday utensils, jewelry, armor of medieval knights.

The third hall “Uyezd town Mstislavl” shows us a cozy district Belarusian town with its way of life, shops, workshops, customs and traditions. The collection "Religious Confessions" is also presented here, which tells about the difficult history of the development of religious beliefs and movements, about the confrontation and peaceful existence of believers of different confessions.

The museum also hosts numerous interesting exhibitions, dedicated to the history of chivalry and medieval culture. The museum initiates the annual knightly festivals of the reenactor clubs.
